The USPS Receipt card:
Note: We now recommend the Electronic Receipt option, below, for convenience and cost savings.
Pick up a stack of these for free at your local post office. (In Canada: online signature verification is included in Registered Mail service.)
Your Return Receipt card is validation from the postal service that your shipment was delivered, and includes the signature of the recipient.
This is useful in proving the other party did receive your shipment, and as such, it removes any possibility of denial of receipt on their part.
Electronic Receipt option:
With USPS there is option to have an electronic version of the Receipt Card. If you choose the electronic version:
- Make sure that you pay in advance, at the post office when you send. This is much cheaper than purchasing this service through USPS online subsequently. The estimated cost for this is $1.30 each.
- Following delivery of each round, make sure to look up your tracking numbers at https://www.usps.com, print out the signatures, and keep them safely in your Liability Action folder.
In Canada, an electronic receipt is included with Registered Mail package. As with USA electronic receipts, be sure to look up your tracking numbers once your shipments are delivered, print out the receipt signatures, and keep them safely in your Liability Action folder.
